Queensland Police have said they are “generally pleased” with the behaviour of crowds at Schoolies week so far, after five were arrested at Surfers Paradise last night.
Police arrested five males at Schoolies on Sunday, down from nine the previous year, saying the arrests were mainly drug-related.
Police said overall they were “generally pleased with crowd behaviour” at the conclusion of the first weekend of the annual end-of-school parties on the Gold Coast.
Schoolies week is a traditional celebration week for high school leavers, who gather at the Gold Coast and surrounds at the end of their Year 12 exam period. Schoolies goes from mid-November to the start of December.
“Overnight police arrested five male schoolies on five offences which were mainly for drug offences,” Queensland Police said in a statement. “Two schoolies were also issued with liquor infringement notices.”
Queensland Police said 10 “non-schoolies” were arrested on 11 charges, mostly relating to public nuisance offences.
Queensland Ambulance said they treated 55 patients at their Emergency Treatment centre on Sunday — 22 males and 33 females. Six of those needed to be taken to hospital.
Queensland Police urged schoolies to be aware that having and taking illegal drugs was dangerous and could have fatal consequences.
