He is better known as R. Prophet. He was previously part of the Kentucky-based alternative southern rap group Nappy Roots. He was a member of the current Nappy Roots.
The first Atlantic album by the group, 2002’s most-sold hip-hop album, was “Watermelon, Chicken & Gritz”, which was released in 2002. Multi-platinum albums included platinum hits like “Headz up”, “Awnaw”, and the two-time Grammy nominated album “Po’ Folks” with Anthony Hamilton. R. Prophet, a prolific member from Nappy Roots, wrote the song’s unique concept, verse and chorus. R. Prophet explained to MTV.com the meaning of Po’ Folks. He said that the lyrics didn’t just refer to being poor as an economic problem. It’s a state. It’s okay to be poor if you have your family and God. You also have different values that matter when it comes down. When God knocks at your door, many other things don’t really matter. Po’ Folks was later awarded a BMI publishing prize in 2002.
In 2003, R. Prophet and the group garnered several award nominations, including American Music Award nominations for Favorite New Artist and Favorite Band, Duo or Group in the Hip-Hop/R&B category. Nappy Roots was also nominated for Grammy awards for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for “Po’ Folks” and Grammy Award for Best Long Form Music Video for their DVD “The World According to Nappy.”
In 2005–06, he started and was involved in numerous community events and programs including; Nappy Roots Failure Free Reading Program; Prophet’s Society, a non-profit organization which helps disadvantaged children; and the development of R. Prophet’s Hip-Hop Multiplication CD, an educational tool used to teach children multiplication. R. Prophet also served as a motivational speaker and mentor for Kentucky, Indiana, and Texas school systems.
R. Prophet’s and Nappy Roots’ contributions in Kentucky and overseas led to Governor Paul E. Patton declaring September 16th 2002 “Nappy Roots Day”. The group was also officially named “Kentucky colonels”, which is the highest honor bestowed by Kentucky. “Nappy Roots Day”, which is a yearly celebration that allows fans to recognize the achievements of R. Prophet, Nappy Roots, and the entire Louisville public, continues to be a yearly affair.

R. Prophet was born Kenneth Ryan Anthony in Oakland, California and moved to Louisville, Kentucky in 1995. Anthony continued his studies in acting and theatre at duPont Manual High School’s Youth Performing Arts School. This program is one of two in Kentucky that allows high school students to major or minor in performing arts. Anthony was a star in many plays, short films, and commercials. Anthony graduated high school and attended Western Kentucky University, where he would start his musical career.
R. Prophet, a student at Western Kentucky University, joined Skinny DeVille and B. Stille to form Nappy Roots. This was an American alternative Southern rap band. Nappy Roots started recording at ET’s Music (a record shop/studio). In 1998, they released their debut full-length album, “Country Fried Cess”. The group was signed to Atlantic Records in 1999 after this independent effort attracted the attention of major labels.
Also in 2003, R. Prophet, of the USO tour. Nappy Roots was among the top groups requested to be a part of USO tour. Soon after, their third album Wooden Leather followed in the latter part of 2003, which featured the hit song “Round the Globe” and featured production from Kanye West, David Banner, and Lil Jon. In 2004, R. Prophet worked with his group on the three songs for the soundtrack of the film The Ladykillers by Joel Coen and Ethan Coen.
