Dubai To Create Underwater Tennis Stadium

Dubai is known for its crazy architectural endeavors. From the world’s tallest and most innovative skyscrapers to artificial islands, architects, engineers and visionaries around the world have managed to make their dreams come true in the rich metropolis. Even though we haven’t heard a lot of new ideas with regard to Dubai that can surprise us, the newest plan proposed by Polish architect, Krzysztof Kotala, did manage to catch our attention – an underwater tennis stadium.

The proposed tennis court is the best combination of technology, ecology and sport, according to Kotala. He stated that currently there isn’t an investor, but he is set to push his idea forwards, until his success. “I think it’s a good idea,” Kotala added further.

Either the world’s silliest or most beautiful tennis stadium is estimated to cost around $1.7 and $2.5 billion, seating as much as 10,000 spectators in the main arena. While the idea may seem great visually, architects don’t agree it sounds as good on paper. Why? Well, underwater the pressure can be enormous, thus the continuous pane of glass needed should be at least 108 ft. wide. Furthermore, architects say the manufacturing of such curved glass would require “unheard-of machinery” and would probably leak with minimal sunlight getting to the stadium. Oh, professionals also say that the players will find the fish distracting.

Nonetheless, Dubai has always managed to surprise the world and deliver on its promises for ground breaking architectural feats.
