Julia’s military background and her dedication to her loyal canine companion set the stage for a story that would capture the attention of the nation.
Julia Jacobson murder: What happened to Julia Jacobson?
In the year 2007, at the age of 29, Jacobson bid farewell to her military career, utilizing the financial skills she had acquired to venture into the world of business. She joined the accounting department of the 7-Eleven corporate office, where she would cross paths with her future friend, Shannel Kidd.
Kidd’s dog and Jacobson’s cherished canine companion, Boogie, would frolic and play together as the two friends spent hours with each other, as depicted in videos on their phones published by “Final Moments.”
According to Kidd, despite having very little time outside of work for romantic pursuits, in 2015, Jacobson crossed paths with Dalen Ware, who worked in supervision at 7-Eleven. Less than two years later, the couple eloped and tied the knot in a drive-thru wedding in Las Vegas.
However, things took a turn for the worse just a few months into their marriage. According to Kidd, Ware was displeased with the amount of time Jacobson spent away from home due to her job.
“I just don’t like him,” Kidd told “Final Moments.” “I don’t like the vibes.”
Ultimately, Jacobson filed for divorce.
In the summer of 2017, within a year of Jacobson’s decision to end things with Ware, she embarked on a romantic relationship with a fellow servicemember named John, who had previously divorced on the East Coast, and who had gained the approval of Jacobson’s friends.
On Saturday, September 2, 2017, Jacobson left early in the morning, taking Boogie with her on a weekend trip for Labor Day. Around that time, Kidd sent a message to inquire, “What’s going on,” and received a reply that said, “I’m traveling with a friend.”
The brevity of the response suggested to Kidd that Jacobson had an attitude, but then another message from Jacobson’s phone read, “Heading to Big Bear.”
Kidd, suspecting that Jacobson was staying with her new boyfriend, John, asked if Boogie was with her and received a message that said, “Yes.”
Kidd told “Final Moments,” “Whenever Julia traveled far, we would talk on the phone for a very long time. Two, three hours, no matter how long, we would be on the phone that whole time.”
Kidd then received another message: “Hey S, if anything happens.”
The message contained no further information, but when Kidd responded with some question marks, a subsequent message from Jacobson’s phone read, “Call my sister.”
There were no further responses to Kidd’s subsequent messages.
Friends and family grew increasingly concerned after not hearing from Jacobson throughout the Labor Day weekend. According to Deputy District Attorney Robert Bulloch, on September 6, 2017, they filed a missing persons report with the San Diego Police Department (SDPD).
Suspects and investigation
The investigators had obtained a search warrant for Jacobson’s electronic devices, but receiving the reports would take a considerable amount of time. The search of Jacobson’s home yielded no results, but they quickly shifted their focus to John, her new boyfriend.
“On our radar immediately was the relationship that Julia had just developed with someone new,” Bulloch said to “Final Moments.”
However, John denied traveling with Jacobson on her trip, and his alibi was investigated, placing him at the bottom of the investigators’ list of suspects.
The police then spoke to Jacobson’s ex-boyfriend, Dalen Ware, who was living in the Phoenix area in Arizona, more than 300 miles east of San Diego at the time. He informed investigators that he hadn’t seen Jacobson for over a year.
OnStar data from Jacobson’s vehicle was limited but sufficient to reveal that her car had stopped at a 7-Eleven store in San Diego’s Tierrasanta neighborhood. There, they gathered surveillance video showing Jacobson inside the store at around 6:45 a.m. on the day she left home, picking items from the shelves and then returning them.
On September 7, five days after Jacobson’s departure to the desert, the police found her white SUV parked just a few houses away from her residence.
Based on the assumption that Jacobson had met with foul play, the police reviewed Jacobson’s emails after the report came in, and what they discovered was truly shocking: numerous messages and threats from Jacobson’s ex-boyfriend, Dalen Ware, sometimes amounting to as many as 15 messages per day.
As the reports continued to pour in for detectives, they learned that on the night of September 2, 2017 – the same day Jacobson left home with Boogie – she had booked a two-night stay at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario.
Surveillance footage showed Jacobson and Ware arriving together at the hotel in their separate vehicles. According to Bulloch, when questioned by detectives, Ware admitted to accompanying Jacobson that evening, considering it their “final farewell” as a couple.
Security cameras captured Jacobson entering the hotel with Ware and Boogie at 9:46 p.m., although no one ever saw Jacobson leave.
Ware emerged as the prime suspect for investigators, and although he admitted to seeing Jacobson on the day she went missing, he claimed he left her at the hotel two days later, and everything was fine. However, the police were able to track his movements, painting a chilling picture for the detectives.
Credit card records linked Ware to a Wal-Mart in Corona, less than 20 miles from the hotel.
On October 13, 2017, despite no signs of Julia Jacobson’s body, the police arrested Ware in Arizona. He was extradited to San Bernardino County and charged with first-degree murder, but prosecutors knew that securing a conviction would be an uphill battle.
