Ilunga Makabu wants to expose his WBC cruiserweight title against Saul "Canelo" Alvarez in 2023, offering the Mexican fighter the opportunity to become a five-division world champion if he dares to take on the challenge.
Last year it appeared that the fight was being planned as Canelo and Makabu even posted pictures together, with Alvarez making his intentions known about the desire to move up to cruiserweight to take on this challenge.
Canelo hasn't announced any of his 2023 opponents
Ilunga Makabu has been very vocal about his chances against Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and has mentioned he's dissapointed that this fight hasn't happened yet due to the Mexican being the best fighter in the world right now, but has promised to finish the fight the way Bivol couldn't.
"If Canelo still wants to fight me, I will knock him out. I'll do a lot better than Bivol did," WBC cruiserweight champion Ilunga Makabu told DAZN.
Ilunga Makabu might have to wait a while to face Canelo
Despite Ilunga Makabu's desire to face the Mexican fighter, Canelo wants to first have a rematch with Dmitry Bivol after the Russian handed him the second loss of his illustrious career.
Also the WBC has mandated that Saul "Canelo" Alvarez defends his title against the winner of the David Benavidez and Caleb Plant fight that'll take place in March 2023.
But still, Ilunga Makabu had a message for Canelo an the boxing fans around the world.
"I want boxing fans to know. Canelo was the one who challenged me. I'm still champion, but Canelo never came to fight me, but I'm sure Canelo realized that it was complicated to face Junior Makabu."
