20. Bernie Madoff

Calling him one of our “favorite” celebrities would be a stretch, but there’s no doubt that Bernie Madoff is one of Queen’s most famous (or should that be infamous?) former residents. Born on April 29, 1938, Madoff kickstarted his career in 1960 when he founded a penny stock brokerage. That brokerage grew into Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities, a company that, by the early 2000s, was the 6th largest market maker in S&P 500 stock. Madoff remained its chairman all the way up until 2008 when he was arrested for running a Ponzi scheme of $64.8 billion – the largest in history. Madoff died of kidney disease in 2021, 12 years into his 150-year sentence at the Federal Correctional Institution in Otisville, New York.

Over the course of his career, he’s been awarded numerous honors, including a staggering 19 Grammy Awards and two Primetime Emmy Awards. After selling over 50 million records worldwide, Bennett retired from live performing in 2021 due to ill health.
